Perth SC put an abrupt end to Ashfield's suprising Night Series success with a conclusive 4-1 win in Saturday evening's semi-final at 6PR Stadium.
Perth's Andreas Oliveira drew first blood with two goals in as many minutes with David Onoforo and Trent Kay topping up their teams lead with one each in the second half.
In fact, Perth had control of the match from the outset and never looked like wavering from their course, direct to the Final.
Oliveira and Antonio Naglieri, instrumental throughout, dominated the mid field and were busy early trying to orchestrate an early success for their team.
Ashfield's first half was punctuated with hesitation and impulsive play. Karl O'Riley and Ryan Frisina had their chances, but their often hasty advances were consistently stopped by a poised and assertive Alex Dunn, making his debut in goals for Perth.
Perth continued to build pressure and break down the Ashfield defence, finding conversion in the 22nd minute off the right foot of Oliveira who had received a cut back cross from Onoforo and drilled the ball into John Perkins bottom right corner.
Within two minutes, Oliveira gave an encore performance with another excellent cross from Onoforo, allowing him to slip the ball expertly past Perkins on his left.
Ashfield were showing Perth a lot of respect and, combined with a lack of composure and no apparent shape, continued to fire balls forward haphazardly. On a positive note, Okwe Diamonstar was resilient in defence and was able to confine Onoforo and friends for the most part.
The combination of O'Riley and Frisina showed promise, resulting in a brilliant cross directly in front of goal, but Dunn was a problem for them, intercepting a measured ball before it could connect with Ian Griffiths.
Afforded plenty of space and time by their opponents, Perth were unlucky not to go to the break 3-0 up after Oliveira attacked again on the 44th, this time a steadfast Perkins, assisted by Diamonstar, blocking a direct strike.
Perth wasted no time after the break as Naglieri played a ball through from deep right to Onoforo who got behind it directly in front and challenged Perkins one on one, slid the ball past and gave his team their third breakthrough.
With any advance forward from Ashfield accompanied with indecisiveness and a lack of cohesion, Dunn would have been forgiven for being caught off guard when an attack came out of the blue from the head of Brian Maybin. Dunn maintained composure and picked the flight of the ball perfectly, holding Ashfield still without score in the 59th minute.
A reward for Trent Kay's consistent attacking pressure came in the 61st, as he played off Josh Wilkins out on the left, carried the ball through and challenged Perkins head on with his direct strike on the run finding the back of the net with apparent ease.
A visual illusion had Ashfield fans excited in the 65th minute as golden boy Frisina's gallant attempt appeared to have landed in the back of the net when it was actually behind it.
They would have to wait until the 80th for their team to finally breakthrough. Daryl Warren and Matthew Wardle were able to orchestrate a play, feeding the ball into Frisina directly in front, whose header was just out of reach for Dunn and, this time, it was no illusion.
Just for a fleeting moment, momentum shifted in favour of the Ashfield side with another attempt coming from a brilliant ball through to O'Riley who blasted it way wide with an awkward touch.
As the time ran out, so did the intensity from both teams with Perth outclassing the enduring Ashfield SC and having done more than enough to secure their place against Bayswater in next week's Final.
Perth coach Gianfranco Circati said he was looking forward to a big Italian clash with Bayswater next week.
"We played alright tonight apart from the last 15-20 minutes but now we should be ready for the final."
"Every game is different we know we're going to have a very hard game against Bayswater. They have very strong players at the front and an attacking midfield so hopefully we can take home the final, but we will see."
"Taking out the Night Series would be a good start to the season, which is obviously our main focus so of course, just like every other game, we will try to win." |
